City bans people with body odour from public places

A city in America is banning people with bad body odour from public places as officials seek to protect residents and visitors from foul smells.

The city of Burien has passed a regulation banning certain behaviour in public.

Under the new law, visitors to city parks, city hall and the library are prohibited from using obscene language, not wearing enough
clothing and having poor hygiene.

If found to have broken one of these rules, they could be banned from that space for up to a year.

City officials say the rules are designed to protect the public from foul smells.

However, not everybody is impressed with the measure.

A number of Twitter users have questioned the ethics of it.

I’ve worked all day and may have forgot deodorant. If I lived in Burien, WA, I could be arrested: http://t.co/GItIYnLG6G.

The American Civil Liberties Union also claims it singles out homeless people.

But Burien City Manager Kamuron Gurol said: “People will, unfortunately, have such a bodily odor that it’s very hard for other patrons to be in that same space.”
