1. Niger Delta Militants under the umbrella of MEND have reacted to President Jonathan’s allegation that the group wanted to assassinate him during Nigeria’s 50th independence anniversary. Mend through its Spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, challenged President Jonathan to come out and reveal to the nation the names of the persons he claimed paid Mr Henry Okah to assassinate him. It denied that it ever tried to assassinate the President.
2. President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday at a rally in Enugu said that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has forgotten his mobile phone number. He accused Buhari of deceiving Nigerians by promising to revive the economy without explaining how he would go about it.
3. The Peoples Democratic Party has said it will continue to approach former President, Olusegun Obasanjo on how to gain his support as he remains the father of the party. The party said it will not sanction him over his negative comments on the party and President Goodluck Jonathan, but instead, would be made to sheathe his sword. This was disclosed by the National Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo.
4. The Amnesty International has said that the January 3 attack on Baga community in Borno State may be the deadliest in the history of Boko Haram’s reign of terror in the North-East of Nigeria. It said about 2,000 people may have been killed in the incident. This was contained in statement AI issued on Friday.
5. The Federal Government on Friday said that there is an ongoing battle over the soul of Baga and other parts of Borno State as the military and the insurgents are in a heated fight as the
government makes effort to reclaim areas under the control of the Boko Haram sect. Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja.
6. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has asked Nigerians to ensure that they collect their Permanent Voter Cards before January, 31st. The Commission said many are yet to collect their PVC.
7. The Director, Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential campaign, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has called on Nigerians and the International Community to find out sincerely what links Buhari to both MEND and the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents. FFK made this call on Friday in a press statement.
8. The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign has has faulted the approach of President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP campaign team in their nationwide campaign. It said instead of the President to tell Nigerians what he had done for them in the past 6 years, it was busy condemning other governments before it. This was contained in a statement signed by Mallam Garba Shehu, Director, Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign.
9. The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has said that the All Progressives Congress’ Presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has an islamic agenda capable of destroying the country. This was contained in a statement he issued on Friday.
10. The Unity Party of Nigeria(UPN) yesterday accepted President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for next month’s presidential election. The decision was taken at its national convention which held in Lagos on Friday. Relatively, the party announced Chief Modupe Onitiri-Abiola, the wife of the late MKO Abiola as its governorship candidate for Lagos state.
