A Vietnam scientist, Prof. Le Dinh Luong who is also president of the Genetic Association of Vietnam, yesterday confirmed an extremely rare case of twins fathered by two different
men. The testing was carried out at his lab in Hanoi.
This is the first of such case in Vietnam; only seven of similar cases have been reported worldwide.
Though Luong refused to reveal the identities of the persons involved, the local online newspaper, Dan Tri, reported that the family of a 34-year-old man from northern Hoa Binh province requested for DNA testing to rule out hospital mix-up because his twins who are now 2-years-old do not look alike. One reportedly has wavy hair, and the other, thin hair.
Prof Luong explained that this only happens when two eggs from the same mother are fertilised by sperms of two different men within 7 days of her ovulation period.
