Man Jailed For ‘Attempting To Hug Transformer’ In Kaduna

When next you are told to go 'hug a transformer', think twice.

A young man identified as Kennedy Gambo has been sentenced to one year in jail, without a fine option, by a Magistrate Court in Zaira, Kaduna state.

Gambo was charged with attempting to vandalise a power transformer belonging to Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company.

Admitting to the crime, Gambo said he wanted to hug the transformer to aid his suicide bid.

However, the Chief Magistrate, Umar Bature, told him that suicide is, itself, a crime, as the Nigerian constitution forbids it.

Gambo was also arraigned on other charges. In addition to his sentencing, he was also sentenced to six-month imprisonment for trespassing, with the option of N5,000 fine; and another six-month imprisonment for mischief, also with a N5,000 option of fine.
