Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning


Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. The Nigerian army yesterday denied being in possession of General Muhammadu Buhari’s secondary school’s certificate, contrary to the claim of the APC presidential candidate. The outgoing Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Olajide Laleye, while addressed newsmen in Abuja, said the miltary does not have the original copy of Buhari’s West African Examinations Council, WAEC.

2. Reacting to Buhari’s certificate saga, the APC in a statement issued in Lagos, yesterday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the PDP and the Jonathan administration were pulling a dangerous stunt by allegedly manipulating the military for their selfish gain. The party demanded for an explanation on what exactly happened to Buhari’s certificate, arguing that with or without the certificate, the General was qualified having obtained an equivalent certificate.


3. President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to Katsina state yesterday almost turned sour as broom wielding youth threw stones at his convoy, asking him to leave the state, singing loud and clear that it was Buhari they wanted. it took the intervention of Jonathan’s security details to calm the situation.

4. President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have being sponsors of the advertisements in some major newspapers by Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, where a warning was sent to the public against voting for the APC presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), because he may die while in office. While reacting to the
development, Director of Media and Publicity of PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, nsaid that the organisation and the party were not in support of the governor’s position on the issue.


5. The Police authority has posted controversial Police AIG, Joseph Mbu to Lagos state, ahead of the 2015 general elections. Mr.Mbu is to take charge of Zone 2, comprising Lagos and Ogun states.

6. The Buhari campaign office has disclosed that the former leader will clear the ongoing controversies regarding his school certificate. It said Buhari will address the media at 9a.m. in Kano.This disclosure was made by Garba Shehu, the Media Director of Buhari’s campaign team.


7. Some youths from Bayelsa State have issued a strong warning to the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, asking her to stay away from the state during the Peoples Democratic Party presidential rally on February, The youths under the auspices of the Mangrove Boys of Bayelsa, threatened that if Mrs Jonathan fails to heed their warning, she would be thoroughly humiliated.

8. In a release placed on its website, the United Nations Security Council has asked the Boko Haram insurgents to release the over 200 Nigerian girls in their custody as soon as possible. The body also condemned all violent attacks by the sect against Nigeria and its neighbour, Cameroon, asking the insurgents to drop their weapons.

9. The Adamawa State Governor, Mr. James Ngilari, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission not to hold elections in his state in February. He told the Commission to suspend all elections in his state till April. The request was however not granted by stakeholders at the workshop on, ‘Internally Displaced Persons and the 2015 general elections’, organised by INEC.

10. Report says soldiers belonging to OP MESSA, attached to 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala in Ogun State, yesterday, intercepted a truck loaded with 3,600 ballot boxes at Odogbolu axis of the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode Expressway. Report has it that the soldiers reportedly handed over the truck and the contents to the Police in Ijebu-Ode area command, after they could not authenticate the source of the ballot boxes that contained some ballot papers.
