Holy Crime? Lagos Court Sentences Two To Jail For Stealing A Bible

A Lagos magistrate court yesterday sentenced one Augustine Victor, 28, and Richard Ejiofor, 20 to 60 days in jail without the option of fine for stealing a Bible.

According to the charges against them Victor and Ejiofor had attacked the owner of the Bible, Mike John, as he was returning from a vigil in the Igb-Elerin area of Lagos. The convicts attacked the owner and snatched his bag thinking the Bible inside the bag was a huge sum of money.

They also forcefully took away the victim’s BlackBerry and wrist watch.

But before they could get away, policemen on patrol intercepted them and took them to the station.

The items were also recovered from them as exhibits.

At the station, they confessed that they suspected the content of the bag was money and explained that they did not intend to steal the Bible.

The magistrate, Mrs J.O.E Adeyemi, sentenced the men after they pleaded guilty as charged.
