Accidental Gun Discharge Injures 2 People At Lagos Airport

Two people were reportedly injured at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport on Friday after a gun owned by an orderly to a Senator accidentally discharged.

According to Sahara Reporters, the accident occurred when a Senator’s orderly tried to remove the magazine from his gun before boarding but ended up shooting himself and
another woman. The incident caused panic within the terminal as travellers and airport workers ran for safety upon hearing the gunshot.

An eyewitness also recounted the incident, stating that the security man wanted to dislodge the magazine from his gun in line with standard practice in air travel but incidentally shot himself and a woman on the leg. Both of them were taken to a hospital at the airport.

The General Manager, Public Affairs of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Yakubu Dati, confirmed the incident and added that stowing the gun away with its magazine is  standard procedure .

Dati, who described the incident as minor, assured air travellers that all the airports are safe and secure. In addition, he stated that in recognition of the security challenges in the country and around the world, security at Nigerian airports has been fortified.
