Angola’s President Dos Santos Quits After 37 Years

Angola's President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos is set to finally relinquish power and has named a successor.

Dos Santos who is one of Africa's longest-serving heads of government has been president of the oil-rich country for 37 years, taking office after the death of the first Angolan president, Agostinho Neto.

As reported by AFP, the Angolan president told a meeting of the ruling MPLA on Friday that he was ready to step down ahead of the general elections in August 2017, bringing an end to a long reign second only to that of Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Nguema Mbassogo, on the African continent.

The party has reportedly approved the name of the candidate heading the list in the August elections as (Defence Minister) Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco
