Clash Of The Titans: Mayweather Vs Pacquiao

By Aiyeku Timothy.
World boxing is indeed set to witness another ‘clash of the Titans” as it awaits the fight between eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao and the undefeated, fifth-division world champion Floyd Mayweather.

Tomorrow, May 2nd is the set date for the much talked about clash. American legend, Floyd Mayweather, 38 will face Filipino rival, Manny Pacquiao, 36 in a 300million mega-fight for the WBC, WBA and WBO welterweight titles at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather is a proud 11-time, five-weight world champion, while the Filipino, Pacquiao, has won versions of the world title at a record of eight different weights. Wow! Little wonder about 100,000 spectators are exppected to witness the clash of these history makers at the MGM Grand.

Mayweather holds an intimidating record which shows that he has been beaten  in 47 fights since turning pro in 1996. Pacquiao on the other hand has lost just 5 out of 64 bouts. Wow! The two will have to prove to the world they have the best punch as they have both severally boasted.

Apart from the millions the winner is expected to benefit, the fight is expected to be the highest grossing pay per view TV event ever with Mayweather scheduled to earn in the region of $180million and his opponent about $120m.

The big question is, who will have the day? Uncertainty seem to have beclouded the minds of quite a lot of boxing fans as they are yet to give any of the world champions the nod. They consider both as having sound approaches to their games which equals to the other.

Some boxing fans describe Mayweather as a ‘street boxer’ with enormous strength and
reflex against his opponent Pacquiao who is perceived as a swift and discipline boxer. Therefore the comparison is equally matched.

Mayweather uses the “gorilla”tactics which has to do with dancing around the ring and calculatively waits for an opening for a perfect strike on his opponent. On the other hand, the Filipino exhausts the full art of boxing making use of the regular routine of dock, block, and punch with tenacity.

However, Mayweather has gone through a divorce process that lingered around his pride and arrogance which makes fans skeptical about the possibility of his personal tendency affecting his performance, owing to the fact that his 36 year old opponent has a stable family that could instigate calmness and focus in the ring.

Who will carry the day, MAYweather or Pacquiao?
